Sugar Free Lifestyle

A long time ago I decided to lay off the sugar in my life and adopt a sugar free lifestyle. Of course, it doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the occasional treat when going out. I love to eat some vegan ice cream once in a while. Surprisingly, it wasn’t difficult at all. Of course I’m talking about eliminating processed sugar in all its forms. It can be really tricky to realize that something contains sugar since it has many names. So let’s begin with the different names of sugar in packaged foods:

  • Words ending in “-ose” — dextrose, maltose, sucrose, lactose, fructose, galactose
  • Syrups — corn syrup, maple syrup, carob syrup, rice syrup.
  • Caramel.
  • Molasses.
  • Turbinado.
  • Honey.
  • Fruit juice.
  • Agave nectar.

It’s hard to remember all the names so just take a look at the total sugar amount.

4 g of sugar is equivalent to one teaspoon. 12 g of sugar equals one tablespoon of sugar.

Are there any heathly sugar alternatives? yes! Stevia (natural, minimally processed), monk fruit and sugar alcohols like Xylitol, Malitol, Erythritol, etc. But of me it’s always best to sweeten with raisins, dates (as long as there are no other added ingredients like oils or sulfites), fruits like grapes, pinaples, watermelon, etc.

Wanna lay off the sugar in your life but you find it really difficult? For many, sugar can become a strong addiction both physical and psychological. I use an approach to weane off sugar gradually and to replace with healthier choices.  Part of the process that I use is to increase emotional intelligence, confidence, motivation to create and develop healthier habits and cope with emotions is much better ways. I also use an approach to re-establish the brain-stomach connection to eat when one is physically hungry and to stop when one has eaten enough, it’s funny how modern life is making us ignore these important signals from our bodies.
